Dear visitors - our future students,

Welcome to “Britanicca School”  and welcome to Serbia!

It is really hard to live in Serbia, if you speak neither Serbian nor English. That is why our school offers help and relief in the sense of great choice of courses for you to take: any time of year, any time of day.
“Britanicca School” is highly specialized in English language. Our school is a direct and very active member of the IATEFL, and therefore offers fresh, new and quality approaches in learning.
We are proud to say it all mostly  thanks to  our director of studies, Ms Danijela Bojanic-Gajic, who is currently at her Master TESOL studies at Oxford Brookes University, that our school has made a great difference in teaching among all the other schools! Her international presentations and 19 years long career of teacher and teacher-trainer have culminated in something even bigger – her own GSD method!
The method primarily deals with Serbian speakers who learn English, but can be successfully used to other learners!
Everyone has a question now: How can I learn English, if my own language is Italian, French, German, Polish or Chinese... and my teacher’s native language is Serbian?
There is a way which is very simple. Everything is possible if we just name the final aim, and the aim is to teach you English without any help from a teacher who speaks your native language.
“Britanicca school” offers short, intensive, accelerated courses of English, which you can take without any previous experience in English!
A foreign-student course is based on a bilingual dictionary according to your native language, for instance: English-Italian Oxford dictionary for Italian students as a basic literature and a student’s book in English including a work book and audio CD for each level.  The students are provided with specially designed books for foreign students, chosen from serious publishers and confirmed authors.  Beside that the most important element of learning is a trained, qualified teacher enabled to work with foreign students with special methods and approaches.
Perhaps all this is familiar to you, but one astonishing fact! All courses in our school are intensive, short and accelerated! These facts probably make you even more frightened.
It is not  just enough that you are going to learn English with a teacher who does not speak  your mother tongue, but the course is actually short and intensive! How is this possible?!
It is most likely that not many people are familiar with basic principles of this kind of learning, but yet this kind of specialized course-training gives tremendous results, both in written and oral aspects of English.
The whole idea has started as a project  called “ The 661% Solution” of professor Freeman Lynn Dhority,  which introduced a new method in language teaching- in fact  four voluntary groups within U.S. Army were taught  to German language- three in a  traditional way (three months audio-drill course) and one group was taught in accelerated methods, within 18 days time!
The results showed that only 29% of the soldiers belonging to the standard groups have reached the first level in German- while the accelerated group had 73% of successful soldiers, who have reached the first level of German language with excellent performance.
Ever since, many schools in Britain, New Zealand, Australia and America have used this method especially effective in language teaching practice.  Unlike other sciences, where it is good to make a break between the units, learning any language, on the opposite, is asking the greater frequency of classes. This is simply for the fact that within the language, everything we learn is connected, and therefore, the breaks between the classes lasting more than 24 hours make our brain forget –“erase” the content of previous units. Human brain actually forgets more than 50% of information just two hours after the class. But if your next class is in three or four days, it erases even more!
Accelerated classes are more effective because of the fact that there is no erosion of our memory. Right after the class you took today, you have homework which makes you bring back everything within a couple of hours after the class. Tomorrow again, we correct the homework and take another unit which continues on the previous unit that we have learned.
“Britanicca School” has developed an accelerated GSD-method, which is especially designed for the Serbian speaking area, and is extra effective for the adults, since it is based on the knowledge of Serbian Grammar.
When we teach grammar of English, all the explanations are given in Serbian, to Serbian speakers and then we compare both languages with a lot of practical examples. Therefore students achieve much more than in a traditional way, where professors try to teach beginners in English- in the language they actually do not understand!
When we deal with a foreign student a different tactics is used, as described earlier. Here is a description of what we do and how this method works:
• All the literature we use is chosen from Oxford University Press program or Macmillan Education Program (Oxford), followed by audio or video materials.
• Every student takes a test before taking a course: total beginners do a test in Serbian grammar, and those who have learned English before, take an „Oxford placement test”. On the basis of the results, we advise a proper course to the student.
• We do not deal with children less than 10 years, for their grammar in own language is not developed yet- they need to take children or teenage designed courses, or otherwise prove their maturity by test.
• The new courses usually start every Monday, or every second Monday.
• The student attends classes within 4 weeks time, up to 6 weeks for higher levels - or twenty to thirty days of learning - from Monday to Friday, every day in a row, with no possibility of missing any class - the system is made of connected units.
• On Saturdays we offer 3 hours of free-consultation classes, for anybody who needs an extra explanation.
• Every day a student attends classes with his group for hour and a half (90 minutes), in the term that he or she has chosen.
• The terms are starting from 8 a.m. up to 10 p.m. - another group has the classes on every hour and a half.
• A professor is writing down all the facts about every student into an individual file, which contains results of the tests, behaviors, progress facts and professional opinions of the professor.
• One week after the end of a course, every student is obligated to write a final written exam- three to four hours duration time, with 400 questions at every level and after that a student is taking an oral exam- lasting half an hour per person. Appropriate diplomas are handed in after the oral exam.
• If the student was regularly visiting every class, and was fulfilling the tasks during the course, but does not meet the standards of the test, the school is providing him one free-charge repetition of the whole course, until he gains the level he submitted for.
• “Britanicca school” provides a proper advice to every student about the next level he should take, according to the results of the final tests - without any obligation for the student to continue classes in our school.

• Once a student has chosen any of the Cambridge ESOL examinations, we advise a visit to the British Council first, before we agree on the start of the preparation.
• First of all a student has to take a diagnostic test. When we diagnose the level of student’s knowledge, we can suggest the training: whether it will be just a test-book or a number of courses until the student reaches the level he wishes to pass.
• A student should take into consideration whether the date of the ESOL exam leaves us enough time to prepare him/her and should not apply for the exam before a professor approves  it.
• Preparation is usually taken as a one-to-one course.

You may look up the English Language Teaching catalogue for adults, Oxford University Press, both for other vocational and technical course books (, or the Macmillan teaching catalogue (   and we shall arrange any course you choose.

The program we offer is not made only for Serbian speaking students.
If there is a student without any basic knowledge of English, but who is also unfamiliar to Serbian language, we proceed to a different program.
In that case foreign students usually have to start from the Starter or Beginner course, which are picture based, and often have to use a picture dictionary, or a bilingual dictionary suiting their own native language: for example a Polish student should use an Oxford English-Polish dictionary, while our professor will be teaching in a very simplified English language.
• If a foreign student has already got some basic knowledge, he then can take a test in English (an Oxford Placement test by Dave Allan)
• Whether a student is Serbian or foreign citizen, apart from the test, there is an interview in order to find the purpose of learning, which is extremely important.
• If there is no possibility to organize a group course when a student wants to start, the school will provide a one-to-one course within 24 hours
• Individual or one-to-one courses are a very common case of teaching for very busy or very sensitive people, who do not wish to work within a group, or cannot fit into our fixed time-table
•  Individual courses are recommended for highly specialized courses (vocational or technical) and also for the Cambridge ESOL examination preparation, TOEFL iBT,  IELTS or GRE, which are strongly advised to be taken separately or performed just in micro-groups (2, 3 or 4 students - if all the students have scored an approximate percentage at the placement test)
• “Britanicca School” provides you the possibility of courses organized in your company, after or during your working hours, if you feel more comfortable to have a professor visiting you, instead of you loosing a lot of time in the city traffic-jam.
• According to the number of students in your company, the school can give you special prices. One of the projects of that kind, we completed  successfully, in cooperation with NGO Serbian Democratic Forum,  included 108 participants, taking two courses in a row and 14000 classes were held within a year!

Foreign students, who are absolute beginners, start with zero level - Starter course.
It is mostly based on objects visible in our environment, basic words, common phrases, simple grammar, one tense and picture oriented learning. Beside a bilingual dictionary (English and your native) it is very important to include a picture dictionary on a basic level, which contains 2000 words, but 300-500 words should be adopted by the student. This course takes only 20 days, from Monday to Friday two classes every day. The course includes testing daily and weekly, progress tests and final test. All skills are included: reading, writing, listening and speaking. This basic knowledge is a key to further learning. The courses can be organized in small groups or individually. Audio and video materials are included.

Next level is a Beginner course (0.5 level), when a student is able to communicate a little in English and we can start with some real grammar. Now we can learn more than one tense and explain some abstract terms. Student uses the bilingual dictionary more often with teacher`s guidance and his vocabulary rises up to 600-800 words, three tenses and sentence structure are introduced. At this level a student starts to create his own statements and questions, which is actually the beginning of the speech. A student can also understand another speaker addressing him in English, but doesn`t understand the real fluent English outside of the classroom. Student can read and write with certain confidence based on experience and topics that he has exercised during the classes. This is the end of tutorial learning. At the next level a student starts to think in English and he seeks the answers and conclusions while learning grammar.

Elementary level is marked as level 1 according to as the basic knowledge of English, which makes the student ready to survive in real life situations. For this level a student needs to have previous elements of knowledge in order to understand the complex grammar as parts of the speech, precise phonology rules, morphology and syntax of English. Here one starts to see that the tenses are connected and that together they make the tense system, where the verbs have different functions and characteristics. At this level a student is aware of the differences between his native language and English. The teacher helps him to connect the conclusions and together they discuss the grammar, vocabulary and every-day language. At this point a student also becomes aware of the English culture. This level deals with conversation, six tenses, complex sentences, phrases and expressions, 1100 words and independent  writing tasks.
Elementary course is the corner stone of all your future learning, but it is certainly not a professional level. It is simply a ground for the upper storages we want to build: Business or General English courses, special courses and workshops, international tests…

BASIC SURVIVAL- special conversational course / level one

“Basic Survival English” is the second part of elementary course. While the elementary course deals with all language skills: writing, reading, listening and speaking, the Basic Survival program is 90% reading, speaking and new vocabulary: conversation is based on familiar elementary grammar, business dialogues, and everyday situations with all tips and phrases you need. It is described as international English for professional people.
In this book you will become a businessman, and we will take you to the long-distance trip and help you make a good business deal.
However 10 % of the class itself, is always dedicated to grammar and writing. During the talk we also correct your mistakes. The classes are dynamic, funny and original. We use all proved strategies to enlarge your vocabulary and games to accelerate your speech towards the fluency. Audio materials are rich and interesting. Video materials are helpful for all social events where English is unavoidable and you will experience and exercise many situations in the classroom. When you finish this course you will be able to travel alone and visit your partners all around the world. But if you are a high-rank manager or a diplomat officer, you will have to go further.

This course gives us opportunity to learn some real fluent English. There are many new topics to discover, serious grammar and rich vocabulary for those who want more in English and for those who are managers, officers, directors, students… The aim of this course is to make you use a full, free sentence, enabling you to say precisely what you meant with no hesitation. During the class you are asked to take an active part in discussion and we will teach you how to express your opinion. You will talk in English almost all the time, read and ask questions to your teacher. From this course on, you are slowly becoming an independent user of English, which means that you can learn some things without your teacher. You will learn strategies for fast reading, translation without dictionary and some really hard grammar, but the classes are so interesting at this point, that most people find out that time can fly! In this course we shall teach a lot of writing, official papers like documents, e-mails, letters, essays, faxes. Nine tenses and 2000 words are built into this course. This course aims to provide a big introduction into more complex structures of intermediate levels. There are three intermediate levels: Pre-intermediate, Intermediate and Upper Intermediate course. Pre-intermediate and intermediate together make B1 level, and are connected.

SURVIVAL ENGLISH- second conversational course

If you somehow, find it still difficult to talk in English fluently, even after the pre-intermediate course, this will finally make an end to all barriers in your speaking process.
Within twenty days of exercises, we are going to break every obstacle and correct every mistake in your speech. We are again travelling together abroad, and English is our business language. But the grammar and your business tasks are more complex now. There are 48 topics and situations, and plenty of exercises for you to overcome any kind of uncertainty. Also, there are hours and hours of good English in dialogues for you to listen between the lectures. Beside that video materials show us how to behave in some very important situations on our job, but  it teaches us what to do when you take your business partners to a lunch, conference, meeting, hotel. Many written  tasks are provided in your workbook to help you find the right form to  address the  people around you.

The Intermediate course  follows as the next one,  and there are just two more General English courses: Upper Intermediate and Advanced. Each one is a big step forward into academic English. They lead us to complex English in the level of literature, science and journalistic language filled with all existing gramatical structures and very reach vocabulary.
However, after the Pre-intermediate course there are several  other options to follow. Everything depends upon your needs, because your knowledge now is mature enough to start business, special or vocational courses, instead og going further with new grammar and vocabulary. A lot depends upon your position in the company/institution, and daily usage of English language.

Test of English as a Foreign Language- TOEFL

Students and graduates who want to study abroad, must take this test when they apply to study  in English. The test lasts  four hours and a student is not recommended  to take this exam after lower courses. The test is mostly possible to pass after the upper-intermediate course. There are four parts of the test to check your language competence and skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
There are PBT,CBT and iBT TOEFL versions of the test (paper-based, computer-based and internet-based TOEFL test). After the test a student is given a report whatever the score is, but the usual condition of many universities and employers is a score leveled to at least upper-intermediate or equal to FCE- to enter  the Bachelor degree studies, and Advanced or Proficiency level (CAE/CPE) for Master studies.
Before you decide to apply for this test you should also do the diagnostic test. After that we can make a project to upgrade your knowledge to a certain level you need. You must never apply for the TOEFL test and then afterwards think about the course and preparation. First set the date of the test and leave enough time to prepare yourself for this exam. From 2007 TOEFL is mostly offered  in iBT version (Internet based test), which means that you need to have a solid practice in computing beside English.

International English Language Testing System- IELTS

This test is widely recognized by all English-speaking countries. There are two modules: General and Academic. You can pass if you attended at least intermediate or upper-intermediate course, and preparation depends on how high mark is asked of you. Passing marks go from 3 to 9 maximum. It takes  30 minutes for listening, 60 minutes for reading comprehension, 60 minutes for writing, and 15 minutes for speaking. Every foreign institution worldwide has a special  demand about the score. This terms you must know before we start preparation course- what mark should you achieve?

Cambridge ESOL exams
